چکیده

During 1964-65 a continuing investigation was performed to examine the feasibility of obtaining information on the time-changing characteristics of the aurora and night air glow by low-light level image orthlcons at the RadioOptical Observatory of the General Electric Company's Research & Development Center In Schenectady, New York. Although no auroras were detected during this interim period, wavelength and intensity calibrations on a spectrograph of special design using the image orthicon detector were accomplished with spectral lamps and night air glow emissions. Included photographs of night air glow demonstrate that the image orthicon is at least 1000 times faster than photographic film when detecting weak "point" or "line" sources under high contrast conditions. Twenty photoelectrons are sufficient to record a spectral line. Sensitivity calibrations were also performed on a 16" f/20 telescope, where the North Polar Sequence of Stars provided a standard calibrated star field. Within 10 seconds, 18th magnitude stars were detected. Further analysis is given on the data recorded during the September 1963 aurora and initially reported in the Final Report of Phase I, 1963 AFCRL 64-209.

The correlation of ULF waves and auroral intensity before, during and after substorm expansion phase onset

[1] We present case studies of the evolution of Ultra-Low Frequency (ULF) magnetic wave amplitudes and auroral intensity through the late growth phase and the expansion phase of the substorm cycle. We present strong evidence that substorm-related auroral enhancements are clearly and demonstrably linked to ULF wave amplitudes observed at the same location. In all three case studies presented, th...

Reprogrammable optical phase array.

A novel reprogrammable optical phase array (ROPA) device is presented as a reconfigurable electro-optic element. One specific application of the ROPA, a 1 x 6 electro-optic space switch, is fully described. Switching angles are within 2 degrees , and switching is achieved through a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) controlled, diffraction based, optical phase array in a bulk BaTiO3...

Low Loss Electro-Optic Polymer Based Fast Adaptive Phase Shifters Realized in Silicon Nitride and Oxynitride Waveguide Technology

We present a comprehensive study on how to design and fabricate low loss electro-optic phase shifters based on an electro-optic polymer and the silicon nitride and silicon oxynitride waveguide material systems. The loss mechanisms of phase shifters with an electro-optic (EO) polymer cladding are analyzed in detail and design solutions to achieve lowest losses are presented. In order to verify t...

Beam-focus shaping by use of programmable phase-only filters: application to an ultralong focal line.

We have developed a high-resolution programmable adaptive-optic device based on an optically addressed liquid-crystal electro-optic valve controlled by an achromatic three-wave lateral shearing interferometer. We apply this phase-only filter and loop to shape the far-field pattern of laser beams. As a first application, we theoretically compute and experimentally verify the focus along a line l...

Electric field induced biaxiality and the electro-optic effect in a bent-core nematic liquid crystal

We report the observation of a biaxial nematic phase in a bent-core molecular system using polarizing microscopy, electro-optics, and dielectric spectroscopy, where we find that the biaxiality exists on a microscopic scale. An application of electric field induces a macroscopic biaxiality and in consequence gives rise to electro-optic switching. This electro-optic effect shows significant poten...
